About Us

History

Champadanga, an affluent village of Tarakeswar block in the Hugli district, is a very famous hub of good trade and commerce. From very early on, Champadanga had a steady economy based on the opulent vegetation of the area. But sadly for the local people, they missed out on higher educational opportunities. Fortunately, it was in 1961 and on the memorable birth-centenary of Rabindranath Tagore that a group of social workers, businessmen and educationists of the locality decided to set up a Degree College with a dream of bringing higher education to the doors of the locals.
From then on, it took a few years to select a suitable place for erecting the college building. Finally, our college ‘Rabindra Mahavidyalaya’, affiliated to the University of Burdwan officially started its journey on and from 8th November, 1971 and the dream of making an enlightened, informed and confident local community became a reality.
Initially, only eight students were admitted to the Pre-University course and twenty-five students to the B.Com Pass course. Then it was in the academic session of 1972-73 that the B.A. course in the Pre-University and Degree level started. In the decade of the 80’s of the preceding century, a steady inflow of funds in the form of various monetary aids granted to this institution either by the State government or by the University Grants Commission or by similar such agencies, made it possible for a fast paced development of the different wings of the institution.
The dream has become a reality. It has now a student population of nearly three thousand and they are offered quite a remarkable list of 16 Honours and 18 General subjects to choose from. They are also provided with other academic facilities like Learning Resource Centre, Computerized Library Facility, Career Counseling Cell, Smart Digital Classroom, sports etc. for their benefit.

The College made its beginning in the year 1971. This moderate beginning finally paved the way for a full-fledged Honours Course in English in the academic year 1985-86 vide order no. IC/Affin/P/48/149/85 dated 04.10.1985. In the meantime, the faculty strength increased and Prof. Asoke Batabyal joined the Department. At present, the roll strength of the Honours Course runs well above 150 (one hundred and fifty) comprising three years of students. In recent years, the Dept. has collaborated with its counterparts in other neighbouring institutions to arrange National-Level Seminars under the aegis of UGC. As part of the institutional dynamics reflective of new trends and changes in the realm of education, the Department is geared up to keep pace with the developmental initiatives tuned to take the college to new heights of achievement and excellence.

Then onwards, department got a good number of students in every year (which is indeed due to reduction in tuition fees).
