Laboratories

Departmental Laboratories

The College has got state-of-the-art laboratories with all modern equipments deemed necessary in the teaching learning process. There are six laboratory based departments in the institution – Botany, Chemistry, Geography, Microbiology, Physics and Zoology.

BOTANY

The Department of Botany was established in 1984 with simplified General course curriculum. However, in 1998, the department started the first Honours batch. Today, the department is in its full swing with almost 57 Honours students. The department possesses two laboratories with 600 sq ft and 300 sq ft.
The department has 26 compound microscopes (Standard), 13 compound microscopes (GB), 11 simple microscopes (Standard), 01 micro microscope and 01 binocular microscope (Olympus) and used to observe or analyze microscopic objects or organisms or plant parts that may otherwise be too small for the naked human eye to accurately observe. Further to have a perfect identification of the particular structure, microscopic compatible pointer eyepieces (05) are also there to help students. The students perform an optical superimposition of the subject being viewed upon the surface upon which they are drawing the relevant object with the help of camera lucida (32). So it’s an optical device used by the students to draw mainly the algal specimens with a magnification.
Further for physiological experiments, to weigh different objects, 01 electric balance, 01 chemical balance, 01 electric balance and 04 pan balance are there in the department. Further, for tissue maceration and preparation of different nutrient media, several instruments are in the department. For the former purpose, both 01 manual water bath and 01 digital water bath are there. And for the latter, apart from weighing balances, 01 hot plate, 01 digital autoclave, 01 hot air oven and 01 laminar flow are there in the department. These are the instruments which are useful for carrying out experiments in aseptic conditions with proper sterilization.
Moreover, the department has its specimen museum and herbarium that enhance the knowledge of the students regarding the subject.

CHEMISTRY

Presently the Department of Chemistry has three well equipped laboratories. Instruments are mainly used in practical classes by the students; few of them are also used in minor research projects by the faculty members.
The department has following Instrumental facilities:
Spectophotometer (Systronics-105, purchased from CSIR-grant): 1 pcs.
Spectrophotometer is an instrument by which we measure absorption and transmittance of monochromatic light in terms of ratio or a function of the ratio, of the radiant power of the two beams as a functional of spectral wave length. Here the range is 40 – 960 nm.
Conductivity meter (Systronics)-1pcs, (Equiptronics)-2pcs.
We use this electrical conductivity meter to measure the electrical conductivity of an electrolytic solution.
Potentiometer (Equiptronics) -2pcs.
A potentiometer is an instrument for measuring the potential (voltage) in a circuit.
Polarimeter -1pcs.
Polarimetry measures the rotation of polarized light as it passes through an optically active fluid. The measured rotation can be used to calculate the value of solution concentrations; especially substances such as sugars, peptides and volatile oils.
Mechanical shaker -1pcs.
A shaker is a device used in our chemistry laboratory to stir liquids.
Centrifuge: 1 pcs
Centrifuge is an instrument which involves the application of the centripetal force for the sedimentation of heterogeneous mixtures in laboratory settings. We use this process to separate two immiscible substances.
Chemical (analytical) Balance: 21 pcs.
Chemical (analytical) balances are instruments used for precise determining mass of matter. There are analytical balances with a capacity of 100 g and a sensitivity of 0.1 mg in the department.
Digital top pan balance: 4 pcs.
Digital analytical balance (accuracy up to third/fourth decimal of mg) is used for experiments on inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry.
Micro-oven: 2 pcs.
This has a wide range of application such as drying of glass apparatus, heating a chemical reaction etc.
Suction pump with büchner funnel: 1 pcs
A büchner funnel is a piece of laboratory equipment which is used to filter or separate a liquid from a solid attached with a suction pump.

GEOGRAPHY

The Department of Geography possesses one General Laboratory of its own having an area of 398.38 sq ft. The Department is enriched with all kinds of conventional and modern instruments, viz. Rotameter (26 pieces), Planimeter (5 sets), Altimeter (2 pieces), Transit Theodolite and accessories (8 pieces), Dumpy Level and accessories (9 pieces), Plane Table and accessories (2 sets), etc. It is also oriented with different kinds of advanced laboratory instruments, viz. Digital Theodolite (1 set), G.P.S (2 sets-GARMIN), Weather Station (1 set), Mirror Stereoscopes (1 set), etc. At present, the infrastructure of the Department is good enough that the university practical examination is conducted from the last few academic sessions. Apart from these, Maps and Atlas of various types are available in sufficient numbers in the department.

MICROBIOLOGY

The Department of Microbiology of Rabindra Mahavidyalaya was established on 2nd August 2002. It is designed by three Laboratories, one Culture room. The Laboratories are well equipped by modern instruments like Phase Contrast Microscope, Colorimeter etc. which represent the infrastructure of modern science. There are important and valuable instruments like Autoclave to sterilize the moist heat, Blender for mixing, Balance for weighing purpose, colony counter to count the colonies, Hot air oven for sterilization of Dry heat, Vortex for mixing etc in the departmental Laboratory.
The culture room is designed with Laminar Air flow cabinet for bacterial culture, Bacteriological incubator and incubator with shaker for incubation of culture, UV cabinet for bacterial culture etc.
The practical classes are held under proper infrastructure that are husbanding by respected department teachers. The departmental Laboratories of Microbiology in Rabindra Mahavidyalaya are capable to carry out any type of Research works and Project works.

PHYSICS

The student strength in the department of Physics stands as 69(Hons) and 163(general) in B.Sc. Course. Presently there are 05 laboratories and those are equipped with 80 sets of experiments along with 02 Advanced Optical Benches, 01 Laser source, 02 Cathod Ray Oscillosopes and and 03 Spectrometers as prescribed by the respective Board of studies, University of Burdwan.

ZOOLOGY

The department of Zoology has two laboratories well equipped with different instruments for the practical and experimental work as per the syllabus. Instruments needed for animal dissection, hematology, biochemistry, histology, microscopy, ecology, found in the laboratory, are as below:
